Edition originale, illustrée de 148 planches gravées sur acier, dont 96 sur les trois premiers volumes, par Thomas Allom ; le quatrième volume comprend 52 planches dont 36 par Eugène Lami et 16 par Allom.
Plein Veau glacé bleu nuit. Dos à faux nerfs plats orné de diverses roulettes et filets avec certains caissons maroquinés. Plats décorés d'une riche frise Romantique et de fers à froid angulaires. Pièce de titre en maroquin rouge. Tranches marbrées. Rayures sur les plats. Coiffes et mors légèrement frottés. Superbe reliure anglaise.
Le tome IV, qui manque souvent, est la traduction d'Un été à Paris, de Jules Janin. On y retrouve, par l'illustration, un Paris Balzacien. On remarquera que le premier volume contient de nombreuses scènes des Pyrénées, très à la mode alors. Un autre volume contient de nombreuses scènes de la Loire (Saumur, Angers, Amboise...).
L'ouvrage cherche ainsi à rassembler tout ce qu'on trouve de remarquable en France, aussi bien du point de vue architectural que paysager, l'illustration accompagnant le texte historique et descriptif. La richesse illustrative est remarquable, et on admirera autant le château de Pau que le Panthéon, le cirque de Gavarni que la cathédrale d'Orléans. L'intéressant étant que suivant les tendances d'alors, on trouve dans les gravures des personnages en costumes d'époque, et souvent le lieu tel qu'il était alors.
