        Lucien Vogel éditeur|1922
Set of eight original prints in color, drawn on laid paper. The XXXIII and XXXVI sketches are signed lower left and right boards. The boards are introduced by a text Joan Ramon Fernandez.
Original prints made ??for the illustration of The Gazette fashionable, one of the finest and most influential twentieth century fashion magazines, celebrating the talent of creators and artists French burgeoning art deco.
Famous fashion magazine founded in 1912 by Lucien Vogel, The Gazette fashionable appeared until 1925 with an interruption during the War of 1915 to 1920, due to mobilization of its editor. She is 69 Deliveries from just 2000 copies and is illustrated including 573 color plates and 148 sketches depicting models of fashion designers. Upon publication, these luxury publications "are for bibliophiles and worldly aesthetes" (Françoise Tétart-Vittu "good Gazette of tone" in the fashion dictionary, 2016). Printed on fine laid paper, they use a typeface created specifically for the magazine by Georges Peignot, the Cochin character, taken in 1946 by Christian Dior. The prints are made with the technique of metal stencil, enhanced color and some outlined in gold or palladium.
The adventure began in 1912 when Lucien Vogel, man of the world and fashion - it has already participated in Femina magazine - decided to found with his wife Cosette de Brunhoff (John's sister, the father of Babar) Gazette good tone in which the subtitle is then "Art, fashions and frivolities." Georges Charensol quotes the editor: "In 1910, he observed, there was no truly artistic fashion magazine and representative of the spirit of his time. So I thought of making a glossy magazine with truly modern artists [...] I was certain of success because for any fashion country can compete with France. "(" A great art editor. Lucien Vogel "in literary News, No. 133, May 1925). The success of the magazine is immediate, not only in France but also the US and South America.
Originally, Vogel therefore brings together a group of seven artists: André-Édouard Marty and Pierre Brissaud, followed by Georges Lepape and Dammicourt; and finally his friends from the School of Fine Arts as are George Barbier, Bernard Boutet de Monvel or Charles Martin. Other talents come quickly reach the equipped Guy Arnoux, Léon Bakst, Benito, Boutet de Monvel, Umberto Brunelleschi, Chas Laborde, Jean-Gabriel Domergue, Raoul Dufy, Edward Halouze Alexander Iacovleff, Jean Emile Laboureur Charles Loupot, Charles Martin, Maggie Salcedo. These artists, mostly unknown when Lucien Vogel appealed to them, will eventually become iconic figures and artistic sought. These are the same illustrators who make the drawings advertisements Gazette.
The boards highlight the dresses and sublime seven artists of the time: Lanvin, Doeuillet, Paquin, Poiret, Worth, Vionnet and Doucet. The designers provide for each number of exclusive models. Nevertheless, some of Illustrations contained no real model, but only the idea that the illustrator is done in the fashion of the day.
Gazette fashionable is a milestone in the history of fashion. Combining the aesthetic requirement and plastic unit, it brings together for the first time the great talents of the world of arts, literature and fashion and imposed by this alchemy, a new image of women, slender, independent and bold, also driven by the new generation of designers Coco Chanel, Jean Patou, Rochas Marcel ...
Recovery in 1920 by Condé Montrose Nast, Gazette fashionable modeled for the new composition and the aesthetic choices of the "little dying newspaper" that Nast had bought a few years ago: the Vogue magazine.

Lettre autographe inédite signée à Roberto Sotolongo du coeur de la savane
        19 septembre 1953

To our knowledge unpublished autograph letter signed by Ernest Hemingway to Roberto Herrera Sotolongo, 2 pages in blue ink on both sides of a sheet, and envelope postmarked September 19, 1953 with his autograph return address ("E. Hemingway...") on the back.

The letter begins in Spanish and continues in English, before ending with a few Spanish words signed "Mister Papa".

A magnificent letter from Hemingway to his Cuban friend and secretary, recounting his 1953 safari in Kenya. Hemingway reveals the true outcome of the hunt for the black-maned lion, a central theme of his posthumous novel True at first light (1999) later published as Under Killimanjaro (2005).

The writer shares his encounters with a giraffe and an impala, as well as unpublished spear hunts with the Masai, reconnecting with the emotions of his first African adventure twenty years earlier which had inspired classic parts of the Hemingway canon – The Green Hills of Africa, The Snows of Kilimanjaro and The Short happy life of Francis Macomber.

He also recalls a family tragedy: a rare attempt at reconciliation from his third child Gigi, who was suffering from gender dysphoria.

"New York n'aime ni s'asseoir si s'étendre. C'est une ville qui dort debout."
        17 janvier 1949
Initialed autograph manuscript by Jean Cocteau, entitled "L'Aurore" dated by the author 17 January 1919. One page on one leaf written in blue pen. Published in L'Aurore, 19 January 1949 (no. 1353).

Jean Cocteau wrote this dazzling portrait of the city that never sleeps for the newspaper L'Aurore after a twenty-day stay in New York. The writer would later extend this account with his 'Lettre aux Américains' (Grasset, 1949) taking up some of the words and expressions written on the spot in this charming manuscript.
According to legend, Cocteau began writing his 'Lettre aux Américains' on the flight home. One can imagine the writer, eyes still shining with the lights of the city, jotting down his first impressions on this page:

"It's very difficult to speak in a few lines about a city like New York. Did my trip last twenty days or twenty years? I wonder [...] Nothing is lighter than the air of New York. Too light. Everything swirls. What rests and settles is very rare. The skyscrapers themselves sway slightly at the top, and the light shines through them like tulle. At night, Broadway is plagued by frightful electrical tics. And luminous Christmas trees six stories high adorn Park Avenue."

Cocteau had flown to New York in the last days of December 1948 for the premiere of The Eagle with Two Heads, starring Edwige Feuillère as the Queen, and his great love Jean Marais as the young anarchist poet. He hoped to convince the great actress Greta Garbo to play a role in one of his next films:

"It was the first time I'd spent New Year's Eve away from my city, and I'm lucky, when the clock struck midnight, to be kissing Greta Garbo, whose face is more and more admirable."

The writer ends the manuscript with a masterful ode to the New York way of life:

"There are sitting cities. There are cities that lie down. New York likes neither to sit nor to lie down. It's a city that sleeps standing."

In New York, Cocteau found the perfect match for his own creative energy. During this short stay, he posed for Philippe Halsman who had been commissioned by LIFE magazine to "capture on camera what goes on inside a poet's mind". Halsman's emblematic portraits - a janiform double profile, or as a monster-magician with three pairs of hands, smoking, drawing and reading - caught the likeness of the surprisingly varied artist with incomparable accuracy.
Precious impressions of a dandy and protean Cocteau, irresistibly drawn to New York's bustling energy.

        A.J. Valpy|1825

First edition, with seven folding plates engraved by Hallmandel after G. Schärf.
Beige full calf binding, spine with five raised bands framed in gilt, gilt lettered morocco title label lengthwise, stamped arms of the Society of Writers to the Signet in the center of the boards. Restored spine and corners, brittle spine ends, spalls and stains to boards.

A very rare and important publication by the British Consul General in Egypt in 1815, Henry Salt (1780-1827),involved in the excavation of several historical sites and the collection of numerous antiquities. The most remarkable of these is the colossal bust of Ramses II found at Thebes and housed in the British Museum, which is said to have inspired Percy Shelley's "Ozymandias". Salt carefully reproduces and explains various inscriptions, bearing the cartouches of Egyptian gods and pharaohs. He made valuable contributions to the understanding of hieroglyphics, following Thomas Young's work on the Rosetta Stone and Jean-François Champollion's groundbreaking discoveries presented in 1822. Historiography even proved that he successfully translated some Egyptian names independently of Champollion's work.

Provenance: bindings with the arms of the Society of Writers to the Signet, Scottish sollicitors association founded in the late 16th century. Library shelf label glued to the flyleaf.

        Henri Fournier|1844

First edition of this work considered to be Grandville's masterpiece, with illustrations in first print.

Illustrated frontispiece, 36 colored illustrations and 146 in-text woodcuts in black.

Contemporary binding in blue half glazed calf, sunned spine with gilt arabesques, small holes at foot of spine, marbled paper boards, mould made endpapers and flyleaves, speckled edges.
This exuberant and prodigious production of Grandville and Delord (whose name is printed at the bottom of page 292), judged by its contemporaries as already being mad, was rediscovered by the Surrealists.

"Published in 1844 by éditions Fournier, Un autre monde is Grandville's masterpiece. The book is subtitled Transformations, visions, incarnations, ascensions, locomotions, explorations, travels, excursions, stations, cosmogonies, phantasmagorias, dreams, frolics, facetiae, whims, metamorphosis, zoomorphs, lithomorphosis, metempsychosis, apotheosis and other things. With its transformations, its inventions and its phantasmagoria, the work claims to reflect a changing era. Un autre monde recounts and illustrates the extraordinary travels of three neo-gods, Puff, Krackq and Hahblle. [...] It is indeed a philosophical journey that Grandville takes us on [...] The reader, led to a strange planet imagined by the artist, is invited, like Gulliver in the Country of Laputa, on a parodic journey of his philosophical, scientific, economic and religious ideas, of his passions, inventions and worries: romanticism, mechanisation, socialism, money, serial, publicity, anglomania, philanthropy, phrenology, etc." (Annie Renonciat, La Vie et l'œuvre de Grandville, Paris, ACR-Vilo, 1985).

The book that brought fame to Alexander Selkirk and inspired the character of Robinson Crusoe.
English captain and privateer Woodes Rogers undertook his "Voyage Around the World" between 1708 and 1711 at the request of buccaneer William Dampier during the War of the Spanish Succession. This account written on his return narrates the many difficulties encountered by the fleet: desertions, mutinies, scurvy epidemic...
Especially contains the rescue of Scottish sailor Alexander Selkirk, after being marooned on the island of Más a Tierra in the Juan Fernández archipelago, more than six hundred kilometers from the Chilean coast. His ship stopped on this island to resupply with wood and water before returning to England after several failed attacks against Spanish fleet and cities in South America. Selkirk pointed out that the damaged ship needed to be refitted or it would likely sink. The captain refused and left the Scotsman on the deserted island. By the time Selkirk realized the absurdity and danger of his decision to stay there, it was too late, and the ship had already weighed anchor. Ironically, the ship later sunk, drowning half the crew. Four years and four months later, on February 2, 1709, Rogers and his crew landed on the island and met this "a Man cloth'd in goat skins, who look'd wilder than the first owners of them”. An engraving in our copy illustrates this chance encounter: "He had with him his clothes and bedding, with a firelock, some powder, bullets, and tobacco, a hatchet, a knife, a kettle, a bible, some practical pieces, and his mathematical instruments and books. He diverted and provided for himself as well as he could; but for the first eight months had much ado to bear up against Melancholy, and the Terror of being left alone in such a desolate place. He built two hutts cover'd them with long grass, and lin'd them with the skins of soats, which he kill'd with his gun as he wanted, so long as his powder lasted […] At his first coming on board us, he had so much forgot his language for want of use, that we could scarce understand him, for he seem'd to speak his words by halves”. Captain William Dampier who was there during Selkirk's abandonment, encouraged Rogers to hire him as foreman and the unfortunate Scot returned to England with them.
Rogers' account was a great popular success, mainly thanks to Selkirk's recue story. A close friend of Rogers, author Daniel De Foe used this incredible story and extended Robinson's stay on a desert island to twenty-eight years. His novel published in 1719 was a huge bestseller and remains one of the greatest works of literature to this day.

“Jean-Baptiste Labat (1663-1738), more commonly known as Father Labat, was a Dominican missionary, botanist, explorer, ethnographer, military man, landowner, engineer and writer.
A staunch defender of slavery, he played an important role in the sugar cane industry in the French West Indies. He is known for developing a type of brandy to cure fever, which after some improvements became rum.” (Museum of Art and History, Le Havre)

Lettre autographe signée sur le peuple premier des Vazimba à Madagascar
        28 février 1871
Autograph letter signed on the Vazimba pepople of Madagascar

Unpublished autograph letter signed by William Ellis, four pages in black ink on one folded leaf and one single leaf.
Interesting letter by Rev. William Ellis, missionary for the London Missionary Society in Madagascar and author of the earliest preserved photographs of the island.
A beautiful testimony of Ellis' ethnographic approach far from the "theory of the savage" commonly conveyed in European societies. He gives his interlocutor precious information on the Vazimba, still unidentified in the 19th century and described by first explorers as a warlike pygmy people living in the Malagasy mountains. Ellis is very critical of the fantasized descriptions of his predecessors and favors the direct testimonies of the inhabitants keeping the memory of this extinct people.
Author of several books on Malagasy history, Ellis describes in detail the legends on the Vazimba believed to be the island's first inhabitants, characterized by their small size and reddened skin. Ellis doubted the accounts of explorers Flacourt (1648) and Abbé Rochon (1768), who referred to this people as "Kimos" or "Quimos" and described them as a "dwarf race". He relies more on the testimonies of the island's inhabitants collected during his travels among the Hovas and the Betsiles, reporting the fear and respect that Vazimba spirits and burials still inspired. The letter gathers and criticizes current knowledge on the subject and mentions the experience of his successor, Rev. Charles Jukes of the London Missionary Society, for whom he celebrated a mass sending him to proclaim the Gospel on July 8, 1866.
In this letter, he mentions a hypothesis later confirmed by modern scientific research: the Vazimba are one of the founding communities of the island at the origin of the Malagasy language and culture.
"[…] By the Hova's & others who spoke of them, they were called Vazimba. They were said to be smaller in stature and lighter in colour than the Hovas, & to be regarded with superstitious feelings by the other inhabitants, who hold their tombs in extreme veneration & frequently offer at their tombs sacrifices or gifts to the spirits of the Vazimba.
During my own intercourse with people on the coast & in the interior I made repeated enquiries, but never met with a native who had seen a Vazimba. Their graves I saw frequently in my journeys among the people in the interior. I saw also many of their tombs at which offerings had been recently presented and found that many of the people regarded them with superstitious fear and seemed exceedingly afraid of doing any thing likely offend them. The Hovas didn't appear to know anything of the name of Kimos all elapses of whom I enquired call the diminutive race Vazimba & spoke of them as the ancient or earliest inhabitants of the country. […] My friend informed me that the Betsiles do not speak of the Vazimba as remarkable on account of their small size or light colour, many of the Hovas are of quite a light colour. [...]
My own opinion is that the Vazimba are the dwarf of which early writers speak & that they are not as diminutive as they have been represented to be.
As our missionaries now occupy the Betsiles country, I have no doubt we shall soon have reliable accounts of the Vazimba relating of their present condition as well as their traditions of the past. If the foregoing statements should prove in any way revocable it will be gratifying so."
A fascinating and well-documented study on the customs and origins of Madagascar's inhabitants by one of the main historians of the island in the 19th century. In the intimacy of private correspondence, these pages reveal the evolution of ethnology and the diverse questionings raised by the missionaries' visits to the island.

        circa 1870-1900

Autograph manuscripts and epigraphic studies with several drawn maps (108 leaves and 86 half-leaves, as well as 28 pages with numerous glued papers) in paper folders and a notebook with a cloth cover titled “Decrees of Alexandria”. Numerous tears to the margins and paper folders, stained cloth cover.
Important unpublished set of epigraphy manuscripts by Egyptologist Auguste Baillet (1834-1923), colleague and friend of Gaston Maspero, the leader of French Egyptology.

Precious notebooks gathering the remarkable philological work of Auguste Baillet, who carried out from the 1860s until his death in 1923 meticulous transcriptions and translations of hieroglyphic, Greek and demotic inscriptions on Egyptian temples, steles, statues, papyrii, and vases. He contributed to the titanic project of a catalog raisonné of Egyptian monuments started by Gaston Maspero. The countless pieces of paper covered with hieroglyphs transcribe the inscriptions of Egyptian monuments deposited in Paris and London museums or in private collections Auguste Baillet had the opportunity to study. Maps of the Nile delta, ancient Palestine and Syria are included in this prolific scientific work, as well as copies and personal translations of the founding texts of hieroglyphic epigraphy, notably those used by Champollion (Rosetta Stone, Turin Papyrus, Decree of Canopus, Book of the Dead...).
The notebooks bring together notes on the latest archaeological finds, as well as surveys and translations covering many periods of Egyptian history: Amarna, Ramesside, Ptolemaic... Baillet makes his own hypotheses and compares the scientific sources of his contemporaries and predecessors, in particular the founding works of Champollion, Maspero, his German colleagues Winckler, Lapsius, Brugsch or the British Flinders Petrie. One of the notebooks contains an unpublished article comparing the versions of the decree of Memphis of Prolemaeus V on the Rosetta Stone and the temple of Philae, following one of his published studies (Le Décret de Memphis et les inscriptions de Rosette et de Damanhour, 1888). He writes dozens of pages on the inscriptions from the monuments of Saïs and Philae, in spite of very incomplete epigraphic material, and draws on several pages very precise maps of Syria and Palestine under Akhenaten. Among many other studies and bibliographical references, he records on tiny, pasted papers an exhaustive epigraphic index of dignitaries appearing in the famous archives of Tell el Amarna discovered in 1891.
The importance of such handwritten documents is primordial for the young science of Egyptology at the end of the 19th century. At the time, knowledge was developing more through handwritten records and epistolary exchanges between scholars than through printed works. It was still very difficult to obtain hieroglyphic typeface in French provinces or even abroad. Manuscript collections of Egyptian texts such as this one therefore proved to be even more precious for research.
Archivist Auguste Baillet found his vocation as an Egyptologist after reading the famous Lettre à Dacier by Jean-François Champollion, unveiling for the first time the secret of hieroglyphs. Abandoning his position in the Empire's archives, he signed his first essays in the 1860s. He took part in the work of a burgeoning French school of Egyptology and studied namely the hieroglyphic numbering system in collaboration with the great scholar Théodule Devéria, as well as ancient Egyptian administrative organization and dialects. He also compared the still divergent methods of transcription of hieroglyphic characters, in a context of great international competition between British, German, and French scholars.
His son Jules Baillet inherited his father's passion and participated in several archaeological missions in Egypt. A fragment of a letter on the back of one of the manuscript leaves attests to the extraordinary intellectual emulation between father and son, who frequently corresponded on epigraphic questions “My dear Jules, [...] to make the passage of col. IV l. 4-8 correct, if not elegant, it is enough to move NE QUID [...] I am always relentless on the restitution of the decrees of Memphis and Alexandria” (letter, May 4, 1885). His studies on the temple of Philae present in this notebook were most certainly used by his son for the history of the temple he published in 1893. They also wrote several studies together and donated numerous Egyptian artifacts to the Orleans Museum of Art and History, coming from Jules Baillet's archaeological missions in Thebes.
The works of Baillet, apart from the manuscripts in this set, were published in 1905 in the prestigious Bibliothèque égyptologique directed by Gaston Maspero.
