first edition.

Binding in full brown sheepskin contemporary, back with ornate nerves. Chocolate morocco title and volume number pieces. Head caps torn off. Upper joint of volume 1 open at the head. 5 blunt corners. Back very rubbed. Trace of wetting in the lower margin of the epistle.

First edition of this important work by Bougainville (1729-1811) on differential and integral calculus in which the author clarifies the work of the Marquis de l'Hopital (1696) by modernizing it. It is one of the first comprehensive treatises on the subject. The Académie des Sciences noticed this treaty in 1753 and published it the following year. The work assured Bougainville a great recognition and opened the doors of the Royal Society in London to him, it is not however to his mathematical works that Bougainville owes his great fame, but to his travels, since he was the first captain French to go around the world (1766-1769), discovering many islands. The report of his trip around the world dates from 1771. Graesse, I, 509. Bougainville will return to science at the end of his life after having left the army and refused his ministry.
