Third edition of the French translation published for the first time in Paris in 1784, in-8. The first edition was published in London, in English, in 1782. The French edition was, however, recast, corrected and translated by the author himself, who added a second volume, and even allowed himself to change. the name of the narrator James in his own name. In addition, the French edition is more clearly anti-English and pro-American.

Crèvecoeur (1735-1813) went to New France in 1755 as an officer and geographer during the French and Indian wars. He fights with the French, then travels a lot and finally becomes a farmer in the English colonies. He became naturalized, then the American Revolution brought him back to France. When he returned in 1783, he discovered that his farm had been ravaged, his wife killed, and two of his children missing. At the level of agriculture it will introduce the culture of the potato in Normandy, and that of the Alfa paperlfa in the United States. The letters are both stories of travel and the first book describing American life, daily life, education and morals, no longer just a traveler, but a man of experience who observed and shared the lives of US. The book helped to shape the image of an American identity based on ingenuity, freedom and equality. Many French families will embark for America after reading this book. The book does not only focus on the American West, many pages are devoted to Canada, Newfoundland ... There are also articles on Washington, Franklin and remarks on the war of independence, slavery , and many anecdotes. The book is dedicated to the Marquis de La Fayette. Widely distributed in England, the book contributed to emigration to the United States.
