John HAWKESWORTH & James COOK

Hawkesworth was commissioned by the British government to take back the original memoirs of Cook, Wallis, Byron who had been sent to the Admiralty. The collection contains Cook's first trip, then lieutenant on the Endeavor. The first volume reports the voyage of Carteret (Strait of Magellan, Queen Charlotte Island, New Britain) and Byron (Rio de Janeiro, Strait of Magellan, Batavia). The second volume contains the voyage of Captain Wallis (Patagonian Coast, Strait of Magellan, Tahiti Island, Tinian Island, Stay in Batavia, Cape Town) and the first voyage of Captain Cook (Madeira, Rio de Janeiro, Tierra del Fuego , Tahiti - description, inhabitants, time). Volume III continues the narrative of Cook's voyage, with the description of some islands near Tahiti, New Zealand and circumnavigation of New Zealand, description of this island, language, agriculture .... The volume IV is still in charge of Cook's journey (New Galle, New Guinea, Savu Island, Batavia, Cape of Good Hope) The voyages all describe a crossing from the west and the Strait of Magellan, the passage through the Pacific Ocean, Asia and Oceania, then return to England.
"No matter how well known Cook's three voyages were, they can not make us forget those of Byron, Carteret, and Wallis, and we owe to these navigators clever observations of the straits of the South Sea, an exact description of the the land of the Patagonians, a luminous dissertation on this extraordinary [...] man's race, finally, the knowledge of the island of Taïti, which Wallis seems to have seen first, since he landed there in 1767, a year before the Bougainville's arrival on this island [...] But what gives the greatest value to these voyages is the circon-navigation of all New Holland paper ... "Boucher of the Richarderie (Universal Library of travels, 1808).
