Paul Henri Dietrich Baron d' HOLBACH

Systême de la nature. Ou des loix du monde physique & du monde moral. Par M. Mirabaud

S.n. [Marc Michel Rey], Londres [Amsterdam] 1770, in-8 (11,5x19,5cm), (12) 366pp. et (6) 408pp., 2 volumes reliés.

Rare first edition second issue, either with the corrected mistakes, and therefore without the errata sheets. This edition is described by Tchemerzine. Full brown calf marbled time. A little lack of Volume I. head head cover of Volume II threadbare. Split bits in head and tail tome II. A dull corner in Volume II. Speckles on the title page of Volume I. Traces of dry old foxing, and sometimes humidity (low margin area) in two volumes, with no gravity. Good general appearance. The most famous work of the author (who is finally assigned to his death), bible materialism, and certainly one of the most iconic works of the Enlightenment. Ideas of Baron d'Holbach are not new, and draws its material cheerfully Hobbes, La Mettrie, Diderot and Helvetius, but he built a new conceptual: to become free, man must overcome prejudices and based on empiricism and materialism, ie the same nature, and therefore reject any religious thought. It is this open and assertive atheism and anti-clericalism which earned the publication of the book the sentence be slashed and burned demonstration. We now know that Diderot was associated with the project and wrote the last chapter of the abstract code of nature. --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate.
