Johann KENTMANN Calculorum qui in membris hominum innascuntur, genera XII

Johann KENTMANN

Calculorum qui in membris hominum innascuntur, genera XII

S.n. [J. Gessner], Tiguri [Zurich] 1565, In-12 (9,5x16cm), 22f., relié.

First and only edition of this rare treatise. Printer’s device to title and 11 illustrations to text of various stones found in the human body. Small historiated capitals.
19th century paper binding, shagreen title piece, faint yellow dampstain from leaf 15 to end.
This was the first treatise to describe stones or gallstones, each of the 12 chapters exploring a part of the human body where such stones are found (intestines, kidneys, vesicle, and so on). Additionally, the work discusses various non-digestible objects ingested by people. Kentmann (1518-1574) was both a mineralogist and doctor, and thus particularly well placed to write on this subject.
