Very rare first edition presenting an inset map of the Holy Land.
Contemporary binding in full brown calf, back with five nerves adorned with double nets and golden florets, double golden thread on the boards, all flecks speckled.
"Singular book, and once very much sought after, in which the author (who does not care to name himself, but we know to be Isaac La Peyrère) claims to demonstrate, by the authority of St. Paul, that he has existed before Adam [...] The volume was condemned from its appearance to be burned by the hand of the executioner.The author himself, although attached to the house of the Prince de Condé, escaped persecution that by going to Rome to throw himself at the feet of the Pope, and to abjure the Protestant faith.
