First edition.
Binding in full glossy brown calf vintage. Back to nerves of 5 pretty florets with stars at the corners. title label of beige morocco. Margins of the title page burnished, as well as the second page. Nice copy.
Biography much more complete than that published in Latin by Charles Pascal in 1584. Before being the author of the Quatrains, Pibrac was one of the most skilled negotiators of his time. Returning to France after having been ambassador at the Council of Trent then in Poland, he was appointed Chancellor of the Queen of Navarre. It was then that he dared to write to him a letter which was interpreted by Queen Margot as an impertinent declaration of love. This affair made a great noise and Pibrac tried to justify himself with skill. Contemporary authors have taken sides for or against him, the author of this biography brings evidence of the passion of Pibrac. The book reproduces, after his biography, the love letters written to a mistress less rebellious than the queen, as well as the text of the famous Quatrains, restored here in the original version, the editors of 1897 and 1720 had transcribed them in modern french.
