first edition that will not know reprint. It is illustrated with a board, a genealogical table of the Estienne family, and 7 figures in-text (medals ...). Title page in red and black. Printing on two columns, the subtitle and the titles on hard paper.
Binding full brown marbled and glazed vintage calf. Back with ornate nerves. title label in red morocco. Headdresses torn off; Upper joint split, lower joint split largely, and even open tail and head. Lack of leather on a nerve; bare and blunt corners; rubbing and scuffs). Fresh paper overall.
A publisher, writer, and biographer, Prosper Marchand conceived this dictionary as a continuation or supplement to the Bayle dictionary. The author left it in manuscript and it is his friend and executor, Lallemand who took four years to organize the notes and perfect the edition. For each character in the dictionary, there is a biography, a review of his works, a bibliography and anecdotes. The book is full of rare and interesting information about forgotten writers or scholars of all ages, including the Middle Ages.
