John MEARES

First edition of the French translation by Billecocq, after the English edition of 1790, without the atlas in 4 containing 28 plates that could be acquired separately.
Binding half shagreen burgundy late twentieth. Back to Jansenist nerves. 2 pieces of title and a piece of tomaison of burgundy sheepskin. Marbled paper in the boards. Some notebooks and sheets restored finely in margin. Title and subtitle of the second volume doubled. Sheets 1 and 3, paper scratched on an area and restored with loss of some letters. Some leaflets yellowed or with browning. The restorations are well done and relatively invisible. Binding made on brochure, paper not trimmed. Nice copy.
One of the fundamental trips to the northwest coast of North America (British Columbia) and more specifically Alaska. The travels from China to America making up the biggest part of the story. John Meares was first captain in the Royal Navy, then commander in the merchant marine; he traded furs between Russia and America, set up counters ... He was the subject of a controversy over the discoveries he had taken for granted, and which he would have drawn from Vancouver. Meares' travel relations are rich and well written, in a clear and descriptive style, exciting in many ways, including Indian, Russian or islanders.
