First edition of the translation of Jean Nicolas Grou.
Binders full marbled brown vintage calf. Ornate smooth backs. Title and volume coins in Havana morocco. A patit is missing at the head of Volume I. A hitch with a headache in Volume II, same as the lower bit in the lead. Missing tail of Volume II. Upper bit tightly split in tail and head in volume II. 4 corners slightly blunted. Despite small defects, good copy, beautiful appearance.
Important translation of Plato's most defining dialogue for his philosophy. Only one translation preceded that of Abbé Grou, that of La Pillonière, a bad translation that was not very well estimated and incomplete. Interesting preface of the translator.
