First edition

Jean-François Paul de Gondi, Cardinal de RETZ Mémoires du Cardinal de Retz

Jean-François Paul de Gondi, Cardinal de RETZ

Mémoires du Cardinal de Retz

Chez Frédéric Bernard, à Amsterdam 1731, In 12 (9,5x15,6cm), (36) 390pp. et (2) 399pp. et (2) 452pp. et (2) 331pp. (31), 4 volumes reliés.

Final edition, rare; "more complete than the preceding and the best that was given in the eighteenth century ..." Tchemerzine V, 396. A portrait engraved by Thomassin on the frontispiece. This will be the only edition of the Mémoires cited by De Bure in his bibliography.
Full sheepskin marbled time. Back to nerves richly and nicely adorned.
Paul de Gondi writes his memoirs at the request of his friends, during his exile, at the age of sixty (around 1675 - 1677), and composes the autobiography of a politician in an era of civil war. Sling. Not content with being a first-rate historical testimony, the work is one of the literary monuments of the 18th century and of memoirs and other autobiographies, with its alert and precise style, that of a man of action and intrigue in the remarkable intelligence and political ambition always awake (always ready to ally with who betrayed it the day before). His memoirs will be a revenge and his last spring of ambition.
