Head cover of Volume I partly missing, with a hitch; that of Volume II with a lack in upper joint. Upper joint of Volume I open; that of Volume II opened the first three boxes. Friction. Corners bumped. Baron de Tott, a French officer stationed in Turkey (attache at Constantinople, then ambassador in Crimea general inpecteur Levant) lived 23 years among the Turks. This book is the testimony, and made his memoirs, he tells both the board of the Baron de Tott and is undoubtedly the first book to give an objective picture of the Turkish nation and Turkish. From his preface, the author, after considerations on the influence of climate on the psychology of peoples (reference to Montesquieu) affirms the importance of knowing and speaking the language of a people, and the need to keep its European bias to describe the manners and institutions of the Turks, which had never been done; that is why we find in this book a wealth of knowledge and new information on the Turks and Tartars; in particular, the many dialogues between the Baron and some lords are particularly relevant for understanding the psychology and the Ottoman culture.
