(2) 458pp. (4) un feuillet blanc., 2 volumes reliés.

First edition, the rarest edition of this text which was reissued in 1787, 1799 and the nineteenth. The illustration consists of 5 folding plates, 2 cards (Egypt, Syria), and 3 beautiful folding panoramic plates (Palmyra, Balbeec ...), all on strong paper.
Binders full marbled and glazed vintage calfskin. Smooth back richly decorated. title label in red maroon and tomaison in morocco green. Triple framing net on the boards. A small lack at the head of Volume I. A hole of verse in the head of Volume I. A corner with a small lack of leather. Friction. The 2 large folding boards, badly folded, emerge from the broaching. Nice copy.
Considered to be the best possible exposition of Egypt from Ottoman Syria in the late eighteenth century, Volney's journey, which lasted four years of observation, owes everything to the quality of its author, both philosopher and orientalist; narrative is different from classic travel books, considerations, remarks and political reflections are predominant, and the political vision is decisive, even when the author describes the habits of the inhabitants, anecdotes, the geographical and commercial situation. Moreover, all of Volney's descriptions served as a basis for the Egyptian expedition, and many scientists and Bonaparte himself took him with them.
