Second edition, after the original published in 1767 at the same publisher.
Binding full marbled and glossy brown calfskin. Smooth back decorated. title label in red morocco, piece of tomane of Havana sheepskin. Traces of friction. Epidermures on the upper dish of Volume I. Fresh set. Nice copy.
Considered as the best work of the author, this story was a great success until the nineteenth. It begins with a historical bibliography on the subject very useful. The Holy Catholic League founded in 1576 consisted of defending France against the Protestants; animated by the Guise, it constituted one of the greatest dangers that the monarchy had known. The spirit of the League gradually fades with the victories of Henry IV, after fomenting many religious wars.
