New edition, which follows the original edition of 1684; there were three editions before this last one but only this one contains an illustration, the plates were borrowed from other works, notably that of Justus Lipsius. Illustrated with a title-frontispiece by Mulder after Hoet, 1 folding map, and 12 figures of which 7 folding engraved in copper by Doesburgh, Stuur and van Vianen. Contemporary full glazed brown calf binding. Decorated raised band spine. Black morocco title label. Missing one endpaper before the title. Upper joint cracked, and lower joint partially cracked. A 3 cm tear to the plate on p. 219 in the margin. Scholar and erudite of the Jesuit society, Joseph Cantel multiplied research and works on Roman Antiquity. His work constituted a reference in the field. The most interesting parts are devoted to the customs and practices, military and civil of ancient Rome. The illustration contains numerous figures, one will distinguish the plate of the gladiator combat and a naval combat in a circus. Bookplate E. P. Sauvage.
