First reprint of this work originally published in 1715, it was published at the same time in the Catholic library in Lyon at Rusand.
Bindings in full blond sheepskin contemporary rooted. Smooth back decorated with 4 florets and wheels. Title pieces of red morocco, and tomaion of black morocco. Headdress of Volume 2 torn off. 3 corners slightly blunted. Traces of friction.
After a description of Japan and the customs of its inhabitants, the book tells the beginning of Christianity in Japan in the mid-sixteenth century by St. Francis Xavier. After a good reception, things deteriorate quickly enough and the first persecutions begin in 1597. In 1614, the Shogun of the TOKUGAWA dynasty banned Christianity.
