David HUME
Histoire de la maison de Tudor
S.n., à Amsterdam 1763, 2 Vol. in-4 (20x26cm), reliés.
First French edition, translated by Mme Belot.
With the arms of Marc-Pierre Voyer Comte d'Argenson (1696-1764), Président du Conseil and Garde des Sceaux repeated four times on spine.
Light brown polished marbled calf, spine in compartments with the arms of Marc-Pierre Voyer Comte d'Argenson, roulette to foot. Red morocco title and volume labels, rubbing to headpieces, joints, bands on spine, bands, and corners. Four corners bumped, a pale yellow dampstain to head of first leaves of volume II. Contents and notices inverted, mixed with preliminaries. A very good copy.
Hume began his history of England in reverse chronological order, starting with the history of the Stuarts, then the Tudors and finally the older Plantagenets.
