PHALARIS

Phalaridos akragantinon tyrannou epistolae. Phalaridis agrigentinorum tyranni epistolae, ex MSS recensuit versione annotationibus & vita insuper authoris donavit Car. Boyle ex aede Christi

Ex typographeo clarendoniano, impensis S. Fletcher, Oxonii (Oxford) 1718, In 8 (12,5x20cm), (16) 154pp. (6), relié.

New bilingual edition (Greek and Latin), after the first of 1695, in Oxford, from another distributor; illustrated with a frontispiece (signed Mr. Burg) showing a torture victim that is enclosed in a metal bull heated from below, it is the famous bronze bull that was allegedly used by the tyrant of Agrigento Phalaris ( 570-554 BC.). the Greek text occupies the greater part of the page, and the translation is distributed underneath as large rating. Good impression. A beautiful title thumbnail representing the Sheldon Theatre in Oxford.
The preface and life of Phalaris are in Latin. The Latin version of Thomas Naogeorgus (gold Kirchmeyer).
Rare binding mosaic speckled tan calf time. Back to Jansenist nerves dumb. Cold boards struck several frames with angular finials. Beautiful and elegant binding, unusual. A small tear in the lead, but some frictions nice copy.
The author is not the true Phalaris, the tyrant of Agrigento, but a secretary of Emperor Commodus, who would have rehabilitated the figure and the cruelty of the tyrant.
Engraved bookplate of the nineteenth century, Sir George Shuckburg bar.
