The first edition was published in Paris in 1621 This edition of Nuremberg, illustrated with 36 figures and a frontispiece unsigned is rare. Each figure is accompanied by a caption. Full mottled calf time. Smooth spine decorated. Part of title in red morocco. Mors, caps and corners restored. The writer John Barclay (1582-1621) was born in Pont-à-Mousson and died in Rome (he was invited by the Pope and pensioner), he was educated by the Jesuits, and then went to England with his father. The Argenis is the main and most famous work (1621) is a long political novel, a utopia in the classical sense in which we see through the great figures of the time. The narrative relates to Latin Vth century novels and L'Astrée (in that it is typical of the first half of the seventeenth), characters, and Argenis Polyarque be found in Du Ryer or Caderon.
