Third edition of the Dictionary of Trévoux said adorned with banners designed by Jean-Michel Papillon, cul-de-lamp and historiated initials. The text is followed in Volume 5 of Dictionarium universale Latin gallicum. Title pages in red and black.
Binders full brown calf, back with six nerves adorned with jewels, wheels and gold threads, parts of title and volume number in red morocco, triple-net stamped cold frame plates, casters gilded on the cuts, handmade paper all sprinkled edges red. boards rubbed, second board of volume 4 notched on ten centimeters, caps often rubbed or missing, tiny wormholes on some back, joints of the second board of volume 4 cracked tail. Very small wormholes in lower margin between columns 238 and 314 of Volume 4 and a wetness in the upper right corner between the columns 738 and 770. The leaflets
Qqqq Q i (between 1712 and 1717 columns) and Q qqqq iiii (between 1724 and 1729 columns) are missing, not having been connected at the time of printing.
Bookplate with pen on every front page in the name of Father Descageul.
Released just under fifty years before Diderot and d'Alembert, said the Universal Dictionary of Trévoux made date in the middle of the encyclopedic edition. Discredited in its infancy because of his Jesuit origins, the text was later recognized for its importance for the history of culture and the French language but also and especially for their outreach to other European courts. He was admitted as a reference book, heir to the Dictionary says Furetière and rivaling the Dictionary of the French Academy. Even today, it is celebrated by scholars for its expression of "fascination with universal knowledge and the ambition of completeness claimed by encyclopedism Enlightenment".
