Antoine de FURETIERE Le roman bourgeois

Antoine de FURETIERE

Le roman bourgeois

Chez Jean-Baptiste Cusson, à Nancy 1712, In-12 (10x16,5cm), (8) 327pp., relié.

New edition, illustrated with 6 unsigned figures, in the style of Dubercelle. Title page in red and black. The first edition was published in 1666.
Binding in full calf blond ice ca 1760 attributable to Derome. Smooth back decorated with 5 small radiating florets, roulette tail and head. title label in black morocco. Triple framing net on the boards. Roulette on the cuts and inner. Golden slices.
The Roman bourgeois is certainly, with Francion de Sorel, one of the most innovative works of the seventeenth in terms of writing; she shares with Sorel the realistic and comic side. Furetière builds his novel against novels in fashion, novels of chivalry or pastoral, like L'Astrée; the work seems to be, in its exploded narration, a true demonstration of the author's thought on the romantic genre and a critique of the literature of his time. The highly digressive character of the work, its lack of apparent unity, led to a failure in the reception of the novel, while Francion was one of the most read works in the seventeenth century.
