HOMERE & ROCHEFORT

L'odyssée d'Homere, traduite en vers, avec des remarques, suivies d'une dissertation sur les voyages d'Ulysse, par M. de Rochefort

Chez Brunet, à Paris 1777, 2 tomes en 2 Vol. fort in 8 (13,5x21,5cm), (2) 509pp. et (2) 458pp. (1), relié.

First edition, illustrated with 13 figures for Volume I, and 12 for the second volume by Biosse. These figures are represented as bas reliefs, from the original sculptures. Cohen cites only the Iliad and the Odyssey not. This edition will be reprinted by the Imprimerie Royale in 1781, the in-4, with the same figures Biosse expanded. Full mottled calf time. Back tooled raised irons lyre in decorated boxes. Part of title in red morocco, and volume number in green morocco. Triple Net framework on dishes with angle irons. Gilt edges. 2 small slits in top of Volume II. Scattered pale foxing, especially on the perimeter engravings. 3 corners bumped. Nice copy printed on heavy paper. This translation of The Odyssey, was, like that of The Iliad published earlier, the first in modern French to be translated from Greek, not Latin; it earned its author Guillaume Dubois Rochefort fame. The translation comes with many footnotes on pages, including reading the other translators. Ultimately a dissertation on the various opinions about traveling Ulysses, including its geography.
