Michel de MONTAIGNE Les essais

Michel de MONTAIGNE

Les essais

Chez Jean Camusat, à Paris 1635, in-folio (22,5x35cm), (42) 871 pp. (23), relié.

Seventh edition, partly original, published by Mademoiselle de Gournay after one of two copies of 1588 corrected and annotated by Montaigne. Montaigne's "daughter-in-alliance" has particularly treated this edition by reviewing her preface to the 1595 edition, which she has considerably increased.
This is the first edition where the translated quotes are placed next to the text. It is illustrated with a frontispiece, unpublished, the first to present the weapons of Montaigne, bottom right, and the balance and its motto "What do I know." It is also the only edition in which the royal privilege is fully transcribed on the back of the last page of text, while the others show only an excerpt.
Snacks in accordance with those of the National Library of Scotland and the British Library Oxford.

Binding full brown sheepskin contemporary, back with five nerves adorned with 5 florets. Title piece of brown sheepskin, double golden thread framing boards. Wide wetting at the bottom right corner on the entire volume. Small work of verse towards p. 600. Pale brownish scattered. A slight lack in the external margin on sheet 13.

Remarkable and important edition in the bibliography of the Essays. It is increased by more than a third according to Brunet, compared to editions published during the lifetime of Montaigne.
