Jean-François de SAINT-LAMBERT Les saisons

Jean-François de SAINT-LAMBERT

Les saisons

S.n., à Amsterdam 1775, Grd et fort in-8 (14x23cm), xxxvj 38-467p., relié.

Seventh edition of the Seasons, after the original was published in 1769 and illustrated by Plover, but First printing illustration of Moreau. This edition is a reprint of that of 1769 and includes the headers Chauffart, but adds 7 figures Moreau, engraved by Delaunay, Duclos, Lebas, Prévost. Note also that the strong paper used for this edition is not the same as the paper end of the first edition. Full contemporary calf. Smooth back ornate. Part of title in red morocco. Flamed veal boards (with supervision Greek) a date later added restoration. Corners bumped. A slot in the upper joint of 5 cm. Pretty good copy. The seasons are preceded by a preface on the bucolic and pastoral poetry and stories followed (as philosophical Ziméo), fugitive pieces, and finally Eastern fables. Voltaire had a great admiration for Saint-Lambert, and especially for his masterpiece: The seasons. This descriptive poetry is also not without charm and will continue to be tasted in the nineteenth century. Saint-Lambert was also essential for the literary society of the eighteenth through its presence in salons. --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate.
