Horace WALPOLE & Clara REEVE

The old english Baron and The castle of Otranto, with a biographical preface

Printed for J. Walker, London 1817, in 16 (7x13,5cm), de xvi, 153pp. (1bc), 116pp., deux partie en un volume relié.

The first edition of The Old English Baron C. Reeve 1777, and of the Castle of Otranto in 1764. A frontispiece and vignette on half-title page, engraved by Warren. Full morocco beige late nineteenth. Back to nerves Jansenist. Part of title in red morocco. Rich inner lace. Gilt edges. Dark back slightly. Nice copy. The Castle of Otranto by Horace Walpole (1717-1797) is the origin of the English Gothic novel or Gothic (Gothic tales english year), which will culminate with the Monk Lewis and Ann Radcliffe novel. Walpole, English politician and writer, was looking for a literature that was close to the neo Gothic architecture (Gothic Revival). According to him, thrillers use the same recipes and places of intrigue (Gothic castle, underground ...). Clara Reeve's novel was one of the first novels in imitation of the Castle of Otranto. --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate.
