Sixth edition, after the original without date in 1745. Edition consisting of two parts: Physical Dissertation on the Occasion of the White Negro and Varieties in the Human Species . The first text was published separately.
Binding full marbled blond calf of the time. Smooth back decorated. Title piece of red morocco. All red slices. Cracks in the bit. A restoration with the lower joint in mind. Good copy.
The arrival in Paris of a black albino was the occasion for the author to expose his theses on the fortuitous variations which explain the birth of new varieties; these ideas prefigure and contain in germ the genetic theories. The second work is a refutation of current theories on the preformation of the embryo. In these two works, Maupertuis demonstrates that he was a pioneer in the life sciences and an important milestone in the evolution of genetic and hereditary theories.
