Considered to be the best possible exposition of Egypt from Ottoman Syria in the late eighteenth century, Volney's journey, which lasted four years of observation, owes everything to the quality of its author, both philosopher and orientalist; narrative is different from classic travel books, considerations, remarks and political reflections are predominant, and the political vision is crucial, even when the author describes the habits of the inhabitants, anecdotes, geographical and commercial situation. Moreover, all of Volney's descriptions served as a basis for the Egyptian expedition, and many scientists and Bonaparte himself took him with them.
