New edition, after the original of 1787. The oldest and most complete edition is that of 1799. Illustrated with 3 large folding maps (Syria, Turkey, Egypt) and 5 beautiful folding plates (pyramids, Palmyra, temple of the sun ...) (Only two cards and three folding boards in the first edition).
Binding half calf icy blonde ca 1840. Back with false nerves adorned with triple boxes, cold fat nets between the nerves. Titres and golden tomatoes. Friction. 5 blunt corners.
Considered to be the best possible exposition of Egypt from Ottoman Syria in the late eighteenth century, Volney's voyage, which lasted four years of observation, owes everything to the quality of its author, both philosopher and orientalist; the narrative is different from classic travel books, considerations, remarks and political reflections are predominant, and the political vision is crucial, even when the author describes the habits of the inhabitants, anecdotes, the geographical and commercial situation. In addition, all the descriptions served as a basis for Napoleon's Egyptian expedition.
Ex libris Victor Guillebert. Second ex libris late nineteenth Dr. Ch. Le Roy.
