Gerhard NOODT & Jean BARBEYRAC Du Pouvoir des Souverains, Et de la Liberte de Conscience

Gerhard NOODT & Jean BARBEYRAC

Du Pouvoir des Souverains, Et de la Liberte de Conscience

Chez Pierre Humbert, à Amsterdam 1714, in-12 (10,5x16,5cm), xlvij (1) 407pp; (1), relié.

Second expanded edition, texts Gronovius (to whom we owe the completion of this edition), on the royal law and the nature of the spell. Translation and notes by Jean Barbeyrac. Illustrated with an allegorical frontispiece. Title page in red and black. The first French edition appeared in 1706. Plein Velin contemporary flaps. Smooth back. Gilt. Arms stamped on the flat (partly faded gold on the back cover). Both speech Noodt originally appeared in Latin in 1699. Noodt was a distinguished professor of law (Franeker, Utrecht and Leiden) which was influenced by the thought of Grotius. The two Treaties constitute a political reflection on the notion of power and the free conscience inalienable human right; universal thought Noodt is indeed to store prominently in the history of tolerance and democracy. --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate.
