Illustrated book inset of 212 woodcuts inset Gavarni, except the last 4 which are Bertall, and 800 thumbnails in text.
Copy of First printing. Note the astonishing typographic diversity in terms of illustration (text frames, cul-de-lamp ...). The legendary and satirical Gavarni woods are an incredible illustrative profusion, like an early comic strip.
Binding half sea sheepskin contemporary. Back with 4 false nerves decorated with 3 baskets of flowers with rocailles frames. Titres and golden tomatoes. Traces of friction on the backs and flat, borders and corners. Several leaflets and notebooks emerged. A few pale foxing scattered for a fresh set. Good copy.
An extraordinary and typically romantic book, the Devil in Paris gathers texts with a prestigious signature (Balzac's philosophy of married life, Mimi Pinson de Musset ...) and endows them with an abundant illustration. This type of book follows the tremendous success of Physiology, which has a strong sense of Parisian moral and physical characters. The first volume is preceded by a story of Paris by Lavallée and the second by a geography of Paris (at the end of the volume Statistics de Paris). This painting of the capital is most interesting because it precedes the great upheavals that will know Paris under the second empire.
