Louis Lambert suivi de Séraphîta

Charpentier, Paris 1842, 12x19cm, relié.

First definitive editions, some parts in first edition.
3/4 red shagreen binding, spine abundantly ruled in blind, entwined gilt Jules Hetzel monogram at foot of spine, untrimmed copy, contemporary binding.
Some rare brown spots.
Exceptionally signed and inscribed by Honoré de Balzac to Jules Hetzel "as a token of the author's friendship".
In the 1840s, Balzac "contributed to a collective collection illustrated with vignettes by Grandville, Scènes de la vie privée et publique des animaux [Public and Private Lives of Animals], published in installments by a new publisher, Pierre-Jules Hetzel (1814-1886), who was to become a friend and play an essential role in the association of publishers who later published the Comédie humaine. [Balzac] also helped Hetzel editing his wiritings signed under his pseudonym P.-J. Stahl." (Roger Pierrot, Honoré de Balzac, Paris, Fayard, 1994).

A remarkable copy, with a precious signed inscription from the author, in a charming contemporary binding.
