Jean-Baptiste Marquis de BOYER D'ARGENS

Mémoires du Comte de Vaxère ou le faux rabin, par l'auteur des Lettres juives

S.n., Amsterdam 1737, in-12 (7.5x12.5cm), (2) XII, 282pp. (1), relié.

First edition, rare. A frontispiece representing Isaac Meio frontispiece by the author, and a figure made by the same. Title page in red and black. Full calf iced contemporary. Back with four nerves decorated with a piece of red morocco. All slices speckled. Caps frayed, cracked joint and corners a bit. Some pale foxing and a small tear at the bottom of page 15. Worthy representative of the Enlightenment, Boyer d'Argens is a philosophical writer, skeptic and pamphleteer, his series of critical books and correspondence, in the manner of Persian Letters (Letters Jewish, Chinese letters, cabalistic letters) made him famous. In the Epistle, the author confesses his motivations in writing this novel, the Jewish usurer who played during his military time, he claims here paint an honest Jew. The work is actually a libertine novel recounting the love of Count Vaxere intended prior to the ecclesiastical state. The love of a Venetian Jewish will lead to a conversion. --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate.
