Alexandre DUMAS Le Comte de Monte-Cristo

Alexandre DUMAS

Le Comte de Monte-Cristo

Chez Marescq & Cie, Paris 1852-1853, Grd. et fort in-8 (20x29cm), 158pp. ; 162pp. ; 158pp. ; 157pp. ; 150pp. ; 149pp., relié.

Second edition illustrated in First printing. This illustrated edition meets only very rarely, many months than the first of 1846 illustrated by Gavarni and Johannot. This one, very abundantly illustrated by Beaucé and Staal, includes 116 inset and more than 360 half-page figures on wood, while the first contained only 32 inset. This edition has not been indexed by Clouzot whereas this one is used to quote the editions illustrated by Marescq for other works of Dumas, Carteret does not mention it either; we can therefore consider that they had not met her, and for our part, it is the first time that we meet a copy in several decades. 6 parts with separate pagination with 6 specific title pages, dates 1852 or 1853. Text on two coons in a frame. Lettrines, culs-de-lampe ...
Binding half brown shagreen of time to small corners. Back to false nerves adorned with 4 large irons type Restoration and roulettes on the nerves, head and tail. Back evenly thinned. Rubbed boards. Some foxinges unevenly distributed, the whole being sometimes very clean, other times with freckles on the pages, the paper remaining white on all 6 parts.
Important illustrated edition unknown to bibliographers and very rare.
