First edition

Gustave FLAUBERT Oeuvres complètes

Gustave FLAUBERT

Oeuvres complètes

A. Quantin, Paris 1885, In-8 (16x23,9cm), 8 volumes reliés.

Collective first edition. A portrait etching by Commanville. Edition ne varietur based on the manuscripts of Mme. Commanville, Flaubert's niece to whom he had bequeathed his manuscripts. Superior vellum print.
Bindings in semi bitter Bordeaux contemporary with corners. Back to Jansenist nerves, cold nets. Author and golden titles. Copy untrimmed, with large margins. Sumptuously fresh paper set, totally freckled. Some slight traces of friction at the edges of paper, otherwise superb copy in a binding of great sobriety.
In addition to the works that had already been published and a volume for the theater, this edition contains the study on Flaubert by Maupassant placed before Bouvard and Pécuchet and some unpublished after the Mixes: By the fields and by the strikes, The dance of the dead, November, Rabelais (a study of youth), Smarh, On board the Cange (fragments of a trip to the Orient). Gustave Flaubert died in 1880.
