First Edition, very rare, long attributed to Madame de La Fayette, published the year of The Princess of Cleves, then Courtilz de Sandras and even Pierre Daniel Huet. Full morocco late nineteenth signed Bellevallée glossy red old. Back to nerves Jansenist. Wide frieze gilded interior. Date tail. Very nice copy, well established, large margins, and unwashed. Unlike The Princess of Cleves, or The Princess of Montpensier, the Memoirs of Holland paper is not a new historical character, but displays as a novel of manners which utiise modern names. The work describes, through the love of a Jewish and a Lusignan, life in the Netherlands in the mid seventeenth century; this is one of the only novels daring to face reality as it is and the work deserves to be distinguished in the invention of French fiction as such. The book interested the history and topography of the Netherlands.
