Alain-René LESAGE Histoire de Gil Blas de Santillane

Alain-René LESAGE

Histoire de Gil Blas de Santillane

Par les libraires associés, à Paris 1747, in-12 (10x17cm), (8) 402pp. (6) et (4) 342pp. (3) et (8) 360pp. et (8) 369pp. (10), 4 volumes reliés.

Final edition, important, revised by the author, on which all future editions will be made. It should not be confused with counterfeiting (which differs by a few differences) published on the same date and is not a reprint of the first edition published in 1715 (first 2 volumes), 1724 (third volume) and 1735 (fourth volumes). This edition is rare and sought after. Illustrated with 30 figures re-engraved from the original published in three editions. Full mottled calf and cold. Back tooled raised. Part of title and volume number in red morocco. Rubbings, some corners bumped. (It is possible that parts of titles and volume numbers have been redone in the late eighteenth century). Good copy. Lovely series. Our copy seems to have a notable feature; Indeed the third volume does not seem perfectly similar to the other; headbands titles are different and the figures are not pages designated by the Small, precisely because we think the third book is part of the infringement in 1747; In addition it has two figures below should have the right edition 1747; we can only guess by what mystery it is isolated in this series. However, the title page is entirely consistent with other volumes. It is now well established that one can not be accused of plagiarism immortal masterpiece of Lesage, the last fire of the baroque picaresque novel; if Lesage drew its material elsewhere, the fact remains that Gil Blas is a unique and personal work. It includes the misadventures of a picaro, frippon also possible that through its multiple meetings draws a satirical portrait of contemporary society. --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate.
