Edgar Allan POE & Charles BAUDELAIRE Histoires extraordinaires

Edgar Allan POE & Charles BAUDELAIRE

Histoires extraordinaires

Michel Lévy frères, Paris 1856, 11x18cm, relié.

Histoires extraordinaires
First edition in French, translated by Charles Baudelaire, of which there were no large paper copies.
Contemporary half red sheep over marbled paper boards, modestly bound as usual for copies from this time, spine with blindtooled dots, black sheep title-piece with author's name, gilt initials to foot of spine, speckled edges.
One endpaper creased, occasional spotting.
The first work of Poe's translated by Baudelaire, with his preface on Sa vie, son oeuvre, [His life, his work], the first step in Baudelaire's conquest of his doppelganger in prose, destined to join Baudelaire's name to Poe's once and for all.
