Le rouge et le noir

A. Levavasseur, Paris 1831, 12,5x19,5cm, 2 volumes reliés sous étuis.

First edition, very rare and highly sought according to Clouzot. 750 copies have been printed, all on current paper.

Full blue maroquin leather binding, decorated with two cartridges and inlaid with red morocco, gilt head and tail strips, casters gold on the caps; gold chain and frieze framing Cold boards; golden on the cuts, all edges gilt chain; inner wheel guards of handmade paper, cases lined with blue morocco night, romantic pastiche binding signed Semet and Plumelle.
Title designed by Henry Monnier, some restorations and discrete small angular gaps.

Handwritten ex-dono on the back of the last page of the second volume: "A Monsieur Villardet aide major au Fort de l'Ecluse le 4 8bre 1836. Dupin Capitaine de la 18ème demi brigade." Fort l'Ecluse is located in the department of Ain, near the Doubs where a big part of the Rouge et le Noir takes place.
Le Rouge et le Noir, begun under the Restauration, wascompleted only four months after the July Revolution of 1830 and has been published only in the last weeks of 1830. All the contemporary critics praised the exceptional qualities of this novel, however, even the laudators were shocked by the sharp criticism of society and by the Jacobinism of Julien Sorel.

Very rare first edition of this classic of French literature, very nice copy set in a spectacular binding by Semet & Plumelle. --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate. Contact us for any information!
