Jules VERNE Les Indes noires. Le chancellor. Martin Paz

Jules VERNE

Les Indes noires. Le chancellor. Martin Paz

J. Hetzel et Cie, Paris 1876, Grd. in-8 (17,5x27,6cm), 173 ; 173pp., relié.

Original illustrated collective edition, drawings by Ferat and Riou engraved by Brabant. Black Indies appeared for the first time and were paired with Chancellor and Martin Paz , published earlier in 1874. Catalog J in fine for 1876-1877.
Cardboard editor with "two-color balloon", in a rare combination of colors since it is a burgundy and no longer a red or a brick red, with a cobalt blue banner (blue slightly drawing on purple). second board with cold macaroon with the Lenègre signature at the bottom left. Beautiful first plaque signed Souze. Back to slightly faded gold. Rubbed caps, as well as joints and edges and corners. A low open corner. second board with dark areas. Pale scattered browning. Good copy.
The Black Indies are the Scottish coal mines. An operator discovers a deposit and builds a real city underground, a young girl is discovered there who seems to have never seen the light of day. The Chancellor , originally published in 1874 is a novel of maritime adventure inspired by the raft of the jellyfish . Martin Paz is located in Peru. One of the only titles by Verne dealing with the discourse on races and hatred of miscegenation, the hero being an Indian in love with a Jewish woman.
