Jules Hetzel 1885, 18x27,5cm, relié.

First illustrated edition of 111 drawings by Benett and a map. One of the only editions bearing the date in title page.
Editor's cartonnage "to the silver banner" connected by Lenègre, special plate by Souze, second flat type Lenègre "e1" according to Jauzac.

Mathias Sandorf is posthumously dedicated to Alexandre Dumas. Jules Verne pays tribute in this novel to the author of the Count of Monte Cristo : "In this book, I tried to make Matthias Sandorf the Monte-Cristo of Extraordinary Voyages ." ; Sandorf was like him imprisoned and betrayed, and his adventures will retrace his vengeance. The novel takes place on the Mediterranean rim of southern Europe.
