Gift Ideas – Inscribed Copies

They are the sign of a desire, of a trust in the recipient, they lay bare the individual behind the writer, a final trace of the writing hand on the finished work - intimately subjected to the particular gaze of a close friend, a peer or an influential critic.

First edition of the twentieth album of the Les Aventures de Tintin series (back cover B29).
Comic book with 62 four-color plates.

Publisher's boards with color illustrations, red cloth spine. Spine-ends slightly rubbed, titles crossed by Montherlant on back cover, very good condition.

Exceptionally signed and inscribed by Hergé, with a black ink drawing of Tintin and Snowy, on the verso of the flyleaf: "To Henry de Montherlant. Since Tintin (a bul) has had the favor of being evoked by Le Cardinal d'Espagne... As a token of particular admiration. Hergé october 1960"

"A Henry de Montherlant. Puisque Tintin (a bul) a eu la faveur d'être évoqué par le Cardinal d'Espagne... En témoignage de toute particulière admiration. Hergé octobre 1960"
Exceptional expression of friendship from Tintin's father to writer Henry de Montherlant whom Hergé preferred out of all modern authors (Hergé, Son of Tintin, Benoît Peeters). This admiration was shared: an avid Tintin collector, Montherlant conscientiously crossed out on the back cover of this album all the titles he already owned, except for The Seven Crystal Balls and The Calculus Affair, probably missing from his collection.
In this precious inscription, Hergé thanks his friend for his nod to Tintin in his play Le Cardinal d'Espagne - Montherlant did name a character in homage to the famous cartoon character, the hilarious "Don Tintin de Retintin" although he appears in another play, titled Don Juan (La Mort qui fait le trottoir), also set in Spain.
Aesthetic drawing-inscription by Hergé to one of his great literary influences - one of his rare inscribed albums to a French literary figure.
