First edition

Jules VERNE Mathias Sandorf

Jules VERNE

Mathias Sandorf

1885, Grd. in 8 (18x27,5cm), 552pp., relié.

Illustrated first edition. 111 drawings by Benett and a map. Catalog in fine FX for the year 1886. One of the only editions bearing the date in title page.
Editor's bookboard bound by Lenègre; special plate by Souze. Cardboard says silver banner, or balloon, beveled boards. This cartonnage was used only for the triple volume Mathias Sandorf.
Beautiful state of both boards, a very nice freshness. Back cleared. Coins slightly rubbed and folded. Caps a little sagging. Fresh paper, totally freckled. Very nice copy, the first plate very fresh.
Mathias Sandorf is posthumously dedicated to Alexandre Dumas. Jules Verne pays tribute in this novel to the author of the Count of Monte Cristo: "In this book, I tried to make Matthias Sandorf the Monte-Cristo of Extraordinary Voyages." ; Sandorf was like him imprisoned and betrayed, and his adventures will retrace his vengeance. The novel takes place on the Mediterranean rim of southern Europe.
