Fenimore COOPER Oeuvres complètes

Fenimore COOPER

Oeuvres complètes

Gustave Barba, Paris 1850, (21 x 31,5 cm), 3 volumes reliés.

Collection of popular illustrated novels. Translation of La Bedollière and illustrations by Bertall (very many woodcuts) composed of nearly 700 vignettes (25 per delivery as well as announced). Double column printing. Rare enough together. A general title and a title page: Complete works. This first volume contains a leaflet detailing the titles of the volume: The Last of the Mohicans, The Pioneers, The Red Corsair, Flower of the Woods, The Spy, The Life of a Sailor. The other two volumes collect novels each time with a particular title page. In one of the volumes, following Ontario, two other novels follow each other without a particular title page.
Half green sheepskin contemporary. Smooth back decorated with nets. Roulette in the tail. Rubbed together. 8 blunt corners. A slot in the upper bit at the head of one of the volumes. Fresh set, despite some scattered foxinges. The 3 volumes do not carry a tomaison.
The three volumes contain 18 novels including the famous tetralogy Tue-Suede, the famous hero whose last of the Mohicans is the most famous novel, but which also includes with the same hero: Ontario, the meadow and hawk's eye, shutters restoring the story of young America and successively occupy the third volume. The three volumes also contain travel stories in Europe, of which Cooper sent the report to America. Fénimore Cooper is the greatest American popular novelist, the equal of Walter Scott in the United States and his works have a great power of evocation. His peers in France were not mistaken there because they had a great admiration for him (Balzac, Sue, Nodier ...).
Thanks to the typography used, the paper and the layout, the popular publications made it possible to gather in a minimum of space and for a modest price of very many works; they are today rare in good condition.
