First illustrated edition, precious. Book illustrated with a portrait of Alexandre Dumas frontispiece and 29 plates hors-texte by Gavarni and Tony Johannot; headers and in-text wood. This edition is preferred over the original, bulky, 9 volumes published in the same year. The first illustrated edition will be reissued in 1849. Binders half sheepskin blue back smooth decorated with nets and a golden tail lace. Sheepskin rubbed in places and corners bumped. Dishes rubbed. Pale stings, mainly in the margins. The conditions of this popular edition is unfortunately often modest.
