Rare set of works by Victor Hugo including the collective edition originally published in 16 volumes, supplemented by two volumes of contemplations on the date of the original but with mention of second edition

Binding in red shagreen, back with five nerves set with gilded nets and adorned with double gilded boxes, golden friezes in heads and tails, marbled paper plates, guards and contreplats of handmade paper, preserved covers, ex-libris glued on contreplats, bindings of the time.

Rare set, in uniform Contemporary binding and tomé from 1 to 40, consisting of 18 volumes of illustrated complete works of Victor Hugo published by Houssiaux and tomés from 1 to 18; then continued by the first editions, with or without mention, the following texts: "Les miserables" published in 10 volumes in 1862 at Pagnerre in Paris (with mention for each volume) and tomés from 19 to 28; "Victor Hugo narrated by a witness of his life" (without mention) published in two volumes by Lacroix in 1863 forming the volumes 29 and 30 of this set; "William Shakespeare" published by Lacroix in 1864 (without mention) tomé 31; "The songs of the streets and woods", still at Lacroix, in 1866 "with mention) forming volume 32," The sea workers "at Lacroix in 1866 (without mention) and including volumes 33, 34 and 35 of our set: "The man who laughs" printed in 1869 at Lacroix (without mention) constituting the volumes 36, 37, 38 and 39, and finally "The terrible year" at Lévy in 1872 (with mention) tomé 40 and completing our series.

Some small freckles without gravity and scuffs on some boards.

Nice series in uniform Contemporary binding with a beautiful ex-libris engraved "More to think than to say" pasted on the contreplat of each volume.
