New edition of the complete works of Victor Hugo now at Houssiaux, who had bought the bottom of the editions Furne.
Bindings in half brown shagreen, back with five nerves adorned with cold boxes and gilded florets, double cold net at the head and tail of the back, triple cold net framing boards, guards and contreplats of handmade paper. Volumes are in series, 1 to 6 for poetry, 1 to 4 for drama, and so on.
Illustrated set of a vignette on each title page, 100 inset engravings (notably by Pisan, Sternhel, Rogier etc.) including three frontispiece plates of three volumes ( Poetry T.1, Roman T.3 and T. 4) and a reproduction of a manuscript drawing of Hugo in Volume 1 of the Rhine , p.265.
The series breaks down as follows:
- Novels in four volumes, containing: Han of Iceland , Bug-Jargal , The Last Day of a Condemned, Claude Gueux , Notre-Dame de Paris .
- Drama in four volumes, containing: Cromwell , Hernani , Marion Delorme, The King has fun, Lucretia Borgia, Marie Tudor, Angelo , La Esmeralda , Ruy Blas, The Burgraves . At the end of Volume 3 we find the story of the Hernani and Angelo trial and at the end of Volume 4 the names of the actors who played during the first performances of the pieces mentioned above.
- Poetry in 6 volumes, containing: Odes, Ballads, The Oriental, Autumn Leaves, The Songs dusk, Interior Voices, The Rays and Shadows, The Return of the Emperor, Contemplations.
- The Rhine in three volumes, containing 39 letters and a general conclusion to this fictional epistolary collection.
- Literature and Philosophy in one volume, containing: Journal of Ideas, Opinions and Readings of a Young Jacobite of 1819 , Journal of the Ideas and Opinions of a Revolutionary of 1830. 1823-1824: On Voltaire, On Walter Scott On the Abbe de Lamennais, On Lord Byron, Random Ideas. 1827: Fragment of history. 1830: On Mr. Dovalle. 1825-1832: War on the demolishers! 1833: Ymbert Galloix. 1834: On Mirabeau .
Very nice set in uniform binding perfectly preserved.
