Second edition of the French translation established by J. Dusaulx, expanded with notes and preceded by historical notices on the life of Juvenal and on that of Dusaulx. Half dark green straight-grained morocco with corners, spine with four raised bands set with double gilt fillets decorated with triple gilt compartments, marbled paper boards, marbled endpapers and pastedowns, top edges gilt, elegant near-contemporary unsigned bindings but attributable to Niédrée. Our copy is exceptionally expanded with over 90 engravings including 3 portraits of Juvenal as well as vignettes and portraits. Provenance: from the library of Léon Rattier with his bookplates pasted on the blank endpapers. Bibliophile's annotation at the head of an endpaper in the first volume, some light foxing of no consequence. Handsome copy beautifully presented in a charming near-contemporary binding.
