Tony JOHANNOT & Célestin NANTEUIL & BARON & FRANCAIS

Ludovico Ariosto (dit) L'ARIOSTE

Roland furieux. Traduction nouvelle et en prose par M. V. Philippon de la Madelaine, traducteur de La Jérusalem délivrée, etc...

J. Mallet & Cie, Paris 1844, Grd. in-8 (17,5x25,6cm), 616pp., relié.

First printing of 25 beautiful plates engraved and drawn on China as well as 300 vignettes of Tony Johannot, Baron, French and Celestin Nanteuil. First cover kept.
Binding half black shagreen vintage. Smooth back very richly adorned with 2 large complex ornamental plates. Gothic golden title. Traces of friction. Some yellowed notebooks, especially the leaflets receiving the engravings. Free from freckles, but the last third of the volume yellowed. Beautiful copy, particularly decorative back.
One of the best productions of Johannot that seems to excel in the horror and fantastic register, like his accomplishments in the Travel where you please. Philippon's translation of the Madeleine in prose draws the epic poem originally in verse to the novelistic. Orlando Furioso, completed in 1532, was one of the great successes of Baroque literature, which contaminated the whole of the fine arts.
